Maskterclass: Mask Making | March 2026
with David Gordon and Jackson Bridgers
Tuesdays, March 10, 17, 24, 31
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Maskterclass is a 4-week intensive sculptural mask making workshop where students learn the fundamentals of concepting, sculpting, and painting to create the mask of their dreams. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced artist, Maskterclass provides a welcoming space to explore your creativity, develop new skills, and bring your wildest mask ideas to life.
Mask making is a joyous, playful, and community-building exercise that engages people creatively and socially. It invites participants to create personas, explore self-expression, and grow artistically in a supportive and collaborative environment. Through this transformative process, students discover new facets of their creativity with fellow artists.Using wire and foil, paper mache, paper clay, acrylic paint, and various accessories, we build versatile, light, durable, and beautiful masks. This combination of simple materials and creative techniques allows for endless possibilities in mask design and construction.
Over four weeks, students progress through each stage of mask creation, from initial concept to finished masterpiece. Each week builds upon the last, guiding participants through a carefully designed process.
Week 1: Concepting and Wire Frame
Students decide on a concept and build a frame from either tin foil, armature wire, or a combination of the two. This frame serves as the structural foundation that the rest of the mask will be built upon.
Week 2: Paper Mache
Students paper mache over their frame to finalize the foundation of their mask. This week solidifies the structure and creates a smooth, workable surface for the sculptural details to come.
Week 3: Paper Clay
Students use paper clay to sculpt the form and features of the mask. Details, textures, and dimensional elements are added to create the character and personality of each unique piece.
Week 4: Painting + Polish
Students paint their mask and add finishing touches with acrylics, accessories, and final embellishments. By the end of this week, masks are complete and ready to make their debut at the masquerade!
The Masquerade
We celebrate the completion of each workshop with a masquerade party and photoshoot! Students don their creations for an evening of festivities, professional photography, and communal celebration. It's a magical night where all the hard work comes together, documenting the incredible masks and the artists that created them.
