Ceramic Mini Loom | October 17

In this two-part workshop, participants will build a functional frame loom entirely from clay before returning the in part two to learn the fundamentals of tapestry weaving on the loom they’ve created.

Week One: Building the Loom
Participants will design and construct a ceramic frame loom from clay, considering both form and function as they create a reusable weaving tool. We’ll discuss how looms have historically been handmade and how the tools we use shape the textiles we create. Ceramic looms will be fired between sessions. (Attaching pictures of a small ceramics loom I've built as an example) 

Week Two: Learning to Weave
Using their completed looms, participants will learn foundational tapestry weaving techniques, including plain weave, color changes, creating texture, and finishing methods. Working with a variety of reclaimed yarns and fibers, each participant will begin a woven textile while gaining the skills and confidence to continue weaving long after the workshop concludes.

No prior weaving or ceramics experience is necessary.

  • Malavika Rao is a multidisciplinary artist and educator primarily working in painting, fiber, and installation. malavika's practice recontextualizes practices of homemaking as methods of worldmaking, using craft to heal generational trauma and tend to the fragile relationship between care and survival. In their installations, malavika employs various crafting practices as modes of speculative world-building—creating spaces to interrogate inherited structures of care and propose alternative relational frameworks grounded in reciprocity and collective sustenance.
